Earlier this year there was a contest held on Star Trek's Facebook page called the Star Trek Easter Egg Sweepstakes where folks were asked to try to spot a hidden R2-D2 somewhere in the film, and the first person who spotted it won a prop phaser from the movie. Well, it didn't take too long for someone to snag a peek at R2 as the contest ended in early June when a fan finally spotted the robot floating amongst other debris in outer space. The official description went something like this:
"During the Drill Machine sequence as the Enterprise comes out of its barrel role amidst destruction of the other Federation ships above Vulcan, we cut to an interior Enterprise bridge over the shoulder of Kirk that is looking out through the front viewscreen. In space, R2-D2 is floating in the debris from about the top middle of the screen to the bottom right."
Since then folks have thrown up images claiming they feature the floating R2-D2, but Gizmodo has finally uncovered crystal clear photographic proof that the tiny robot from Star Wars was indeed floating around in Star Trek -- and they even had it confirmed by one of the movie's sequence supervisors at Industrial Light & Magic. So, yeah, check out the photo above and click on the image below to enlarge. Mystery solved.
Oh, and the DVD comes out on Tuesday. Buy it.
