After sixty years of service and over 12,000 reports of unidentified flying objects, Britain's Ministry of Defence is quietly shutting down the department that monitors UFO sightings. No major announcement was made to the media, instead relegated to a tiny blurb on the MOD website.

"The MOD has no opinion on the existence or otherwise of extra-terrestrial life," the official site reports. "The MOD has no specific capability for identifying the nature of such sightings. Accordingly, and in order to make best use of Defence resources, we have decided that from the 1 December 2009 the dedicated UFO hotline answer-phone service and e-mail address will be withdrawn. MOD will no longer respond to reported UFO sightings or investigate them."

The department was seen as a waste of MOD money, with no evidence of a UFO threat and ninety-five percent of all UFO reports being completely explainable phenomenon. The MOD's UFO files will continue to be made public as part of Britain's National Archives. No word on if or when Russell Brand will be returned to his home planet.
