John Hillcoat's 'The Road,' adapted from Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer prize-winning novel and initially pegged as an Oscar-vehicle for Viggo Mortensen, has unexpectedly been pulled back to a much smaller platform release.

The Playlist reported that the Nov. 25 premiere was first scheduled as a wide release (commonly 1000+ theaters) but The Weinstein Co. quickly nixed that idea -- choosing to open the film in a paltry 111 theaters domestically. The Weinsteins have promised the film will hit more cities, but how soon will that be?
