It's official -- Avatar is a runaway box office hit. Many pundits were sure there was no way that director James Cameron would be able to recoup his heavily rumored budget of $400 million, but the film has grossed an impressive $745 million worldwide, with no signs of slowing down. It's on track to beat Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as the highest grossing movie of 2009.
In a Q & A hosted by the L.A. Times, Cameron gave a small hint as to where a sequel to Avatar might take us. "We have some story ideas about how to branch out into other moons of Polyphemus and the Alpha Centauri A solar system," Cameron said. Polyphemus is the gas giant planet that the moon Pandora orbits. The only other tidbits about Avatar 2 were discussed with MTV earlier in the week, including the possibility of a trilogy that continues to follow the story of Jake Sully and Neytiri.
It will be interesting to see how Cameron plans to top himself with a follow-up. There's a lot in an Avatar sequel that could be fleshed out in a way that would actually make the first one a stronger film. Avatar doesn't waste too much time explaining details like "unobtanium" or the nature of the privatized military force, and these are areas that could definitely be expanded upon in a future film.
