Actress Charlize Theron (Monster) and filmmaker David Fincher (Se7en, Zodiac) want to bring a new drama series to HBO and Fox 21, revolving around the investigation of serial killers. They're using John Douglas and Mark Olshaker's book, Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, as their guide. Dexter's executive producer, Scott Buck, will pen the pilot. Theron will be producing the series through her Denver and Delilah banner, which she runs with Beth Kono and J.J. Harris, who have worked with Theron on Monster.

Mind Hunter details Douglas' experience as a top FBI criminal profiler, tracking violent sex offenders and serial killers. During Douglas' time in the FBI he interviewed many notable criminals as part of an academic study, which became the books, Sexual Homicide: Patterns and Motives and Crime Classification Manual. His list of interviewees reads like the who's who of lunatics--including criminals like Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy and David Berkowitz. Douglas was the pioneer for the criminal profiler concept and after his retirement he continued to write and work as a consultant. He was also the inspiration behind characters in films like Silence of the Lambs and the TV series Millennium.

If you haven't read Mind Hunter or his follow up book, Journey into Darkness, I highly recommend them. I first discovered Douglas' book during a period in my life when I practically lived in one used bookstore, thumbing through countless true crime novels. Their musty stench, the hunt for a new story, skulking in the bowels of the bookstore, avoiding judgmental eyes was all part of a ritual I had that at times felt eerily similar to some of the stories I obsessively sought after.

Fincher seems like a natural fit for the project considering his background with psychological thrillers. If the series is on HBO we are guaranteed to get the violence and imagery necessary to make it a winner. Is your killer card already filled with shows like Dexter or can you make room for this series?
