The festival-friendly Steven Soderbergh is a busy director and producer, but he's never really stepped into our genre. He's known primarily for his dramas (Sex, Lies and Videotapes, Traffic, Full Frontal) and his work cementing George Clooney as a movie star (the Oceans Eleven trilogy, Solaris), but it looks like he's backburnered his latest project, Liberace, in favor of something a little closer to the horror fan palette. It's called Contagion and it's shaping up to have one hell of a cast.
The name alone should give you a pretty good idea of the premise, but in case there was any doubt, it is indeed being pitched by screenwriter Scott Z. Burns as Traffic meets Outbreak. It'll follow the lives of a few key people around the world during the onset of a viral epidemic. The people in question? Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Marion Cotillard.
Is it going to be a graphic, apocalyptic scenario? No, probably not. That doesn't mean it'll be any less thrilling for genre fans though. Just expect more Outbreak and less The Stand.
