After a series of pretty successful straight-to-DVD sequels (spin-offs), the American Pie franchise may be attempting to reboot itself on the big screen. The LA Times reports that Universal is interested in bringing on the Harold and Kumar duo of Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg to write a new installment in the American Pie franchise that at this time is being called American Pie 4, which leads many to assume that the story will pick up after American Pie 3 (or American Wedding) -- possibly with something along the lines of American Family or American Pregnancy ... you get the idea.

They note that some of the original cast members are interested in returning, though we're not sure who. The original franchise's core cast included names like Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Alyson Hannigan, Seann William Scott, Tara Reid, Shannon Elizabeth and Eugene Levy, the latter of which continued to stay on for the direct-to-DVD offerings. One would assume that at the very least Biggs and Hannigan would have to return as any direct sequel would probably need to focus on them.

Problem is, who would this film appeal to? The original core audience, as well as the cast, are all in their late 20s and 30s by now, but I would think Universal would want to appeal to the teen audience that made the original franchise a hit in the first place. Are Hurwitz and Schlossberg capable of churning out something that's funny, sure (and maybe raunchy at times), but also a little more adult and heartfelt than those earlier films? And would we even want that?

Is there room for a straight reboot? Could they put together a young cast, head back to high school and re-imagine the teen sex comedy for a 2010 audience? Honestly, I think I'd rather see that than Jim struggling to put on a diaper the right way. You?
