I'm not a member of the "Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End is the wurst movee evar!!!!11" club, but I think we can all agree that it went completely off the rails, was too long, didn't make any sense and was only sporadically entertaining. Another film feels like a cash grab because if the folks at Disney had the proper sense, they'd let this series die and allow us to keep our fond memories of the first film, which managed to be a good time despite being a movie based on a theme park attraction.
But they've done right. They've found a way to get my butt in a seat for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. How? Because the villain will be Blackbeard. And Blackbeard will be played by Ian McShane.
This is a series that knows how to cast its villains, with Geoffrey Rush and Bill Nighy being the best parts of the original films, but McShane as Blackbeard is just inspired casting. Go read up on Blackbeard and tell me you wouldn't want to see an actual biopic on the guy starring McShane. This is a pirate who lit his hair on fire to frighten his enemies!
Anyone who has seen Deadwood knows what an amazing presence McShane is and what he can bring to the role. His work on that show is career-defining and iconic, so it's not too surprising that he's had a tough time finding a truly meaty role in a film. He's always going to live in the shadow of Al Swearengen. Will playing an evil pirate in a supernatural adventure story allow him to break free?
Apparently, the plot of the film has something to do with the fountain of youth and whatever, blah blah, whatever. Ian McShane!
