Scene from The Railway ChildrenIn news that will make some people feel very old indeed - The Railway Children is 40 years old. There have in fact been three films and a television series based on the book by Edith Nesbit but the 1970 film starring Jenny Agutter remains the seminal version - and to celebrate its birthday the film is being rereleased in cinemas.

The Guardian recently spoke to some of the cast of the film who revealed a few shocking facts about filming, namely that Sally Thomsett who played 11-year-old Phyllis was in fact 20 at the time. A fact the producers were so keen to keep a secret they banned her from doing anything an 11-year-old couldn't do.
