If you've been as resistant to the idea of a Thing prequel as the rest of us, then today brings good news. We've known for a while that Universal's prequel is supposed to follow what happened to the Norwegian base camp and we've, at least those of us who are curious enough to read spoiler-heavy production materials, also known that the casting sheet called for a number of different European actors. The concern, however, was that the studio may just settle for some handsome men and women us simple yanks might recognize so long as they can put on a thick Nordic accent when Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. yells action.
Well, now that production is underway up in Canada, Todd Brown at Twitch Film did a little bit of digging and came up with some names of actual cast members. Turns out a few of our fears can now be forgotten. It's unclear what role they'll be playing, but Heijningen has cast three prominent Norwegian actors: Trond Espen Seim, Stig Henrik Hoff, and Jan Gunnar Røise. I'm actually only familiar with Hoff out of that trio, but my not knowing them better actually bodes even better as far as I'm concerned. I'm glad that they'll have authentic unknowns playing the Norwegian team who un-ice the titular monster from above.
Maybe I'm alone, though, in having a few of my trepidations alleviated. I still don't think a Thing prequel is a great idea, but I'm at least starting to think that it may not turn out as sacrilegious as it could be.
