It's Friday! That can mean only one thing: It's time to unveil this week's Horror Squad Movie Club Pick of the Week.
I spent a lot of time trying to come up with just the right film for this week's discussion, and after much hemming and hawing, I finally settled on Don Coscarelli's classic 1979 film, Phantasm.
If, for some strange reason, you've never seen Phantasm, you're in for a treat. It's an incredibly stylish film that evokes memories of some of Italian horror cinema's finest moments. It features a hazy, almost nightmare-like narrative construction that really makes the film memorable, it's got soon-to-be cult film legends Reggie Bannister and Angus Scrimm in prominent roles, impressive visuals from Coscarelli, and most important of all, some wicked flying balls that have to be seen to be believed.
I'm not going to say anything more than that for fear of ruining the experience and subsequent discussion. Swing by Netflix and catch Phantasm on Instant Watch over the weekend, then report back here on Monday to discuss your feelings. I promise there won't be a test -- and that virtual refreshments will be served.
If you're feeling really adventurous, be sure to also check out The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension over at Sci-Fi Squad and don't miss out on Cinematical'sZoolander discussion starting this evening.
