"On May 5 in the year 2000, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be aligned with the earth for the first time in six thousand years. On that day the ice buildup at the South Pole will upset the earth's axis -- sending trillions of tons of ice and water sweeping over the surface of our planet. ASTONISHING EVIDENCE POINTS TO WORLDWIDE DISASTER IN OUR LIFETIME!"

This is from the back of a "scientifically accurate" book published in 1971 that I bought at a used bookstore for a quarter the other day. 5/5/2000 Ice: The Ultimate Disaster by Richard Noone. It's a real book. The back cover promises interviews with with geologists, archaeologists and climatologists, charts, maps, drawings and photographs, all that back up the "doomsday prophecies of Nostradamus" with scientific facts.

Of course, the only problem is that May 5th, 2000 was a decade ago. And the ice caps never shifted. And we're still here. And scientists aren't worried about being crushed by trillions of tons of ice, they're worried about genetically engineering roses to have polka dots.

Let's not get warm and cozy, yet. Let's play this safe. After all, science has been continuously proving that we're all doomed. Let's look at some of Noone's evidence.
