To many, Washington, D.C. immediately conjures up images of Congress, the Supreme Court and the President at the next press conference. But to the members of the Ballou Senior High Marching Band and thousands like them, it's a city filled with crime, gang warfare and a constant fear of violence. 'Ballou' is a moving and powerful story of how the band attempts to win the National High Stepping Marching Band Competition in Birmingham, AL.

At Ballou High School, only 5% of the student body graduates from college and during the filming of the documentary, 58 violent crimes occurred within 1,500 feet of the school. For its members, the marching band is not merely an extracurricular activity, it's a way to boost self-esteem and be given life lessons from substitute parental figures often missing in the students' own lives.
