Remember when it was a big deal that iPods could play videos and movies? It seemed impressive at the time, but I can honestly say I have never watched a movie on my iPod or iPhone - not even a YouTube video. On the other hand, my laptop and me, well, we're a package deal. We travel together. We go drink coffee and work together. We meet with friends for brainstorming sessions. Sometimes -- okay, quite often -- we snuggle up for a movie together. Now, I love my laptop, and movies look great on it, and all that jazz, but you know, sometimes 15" is a little unwieldy, especially on an airplane and the person in front of you has moved his/her chair so it's practically horizontal.

The sexy new iPad could change all that, of course, but there are a few problems:

  • You can buy or rent movies through iTunes and iTunes only, unless...
  • You have a reliable and fast Wi-Fi or 3G & connection that will let you stream movies using the Netflix app, or...
  • You already have movies on a computer which you can sync to your iPad, and unless we're speaking of the digital copies that come with DVDs, that's illegal.
  • Everyone can see what you're watching - awkward!
Those are just a few strikes against switching to the iPad for a movie lover on the go, although it would be great for writing on the road as long as I had a keyboard to go with it. Still, I'm not sold. I think me and my MacBook Pro have a fairly bright future ahead of us -- at least until Steve Jobs unleashes his next gizmo on the world.

So, movie nuts, what's your preferred method of watching movies on the go? Do you watch on your mobile cellular device, music gadget, laptop, or iPad? What's your set-up? Let me know in the comments. Perhaps I can be swayed after all...
