I don't play very many fighting games any more, but as a kid one of my favorite franchises was the 2D fighter Marvel vs. Capcom. Because, really, to a middle schooler hanging out in an arcade, is there anything cooler than having members of the X-Men brawl with the cast of Street Fighter? I submit that there is not.

Well now Capcom has officially unveiled the first trailer for the third entry in the series, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, and it looks geektastic. Personally I wish it was still in the 2D purely for the sake of nostalgia, but I realize that we live in the year 2010 and that the world of sprite-based visuals has long been usurped by polygons. The game will be running on a modified version of the MT Framework engine, which is the backbone on which Capcom's Lost Planet 2 runs.

As for who exactly from the Marvel universe will be fighting who from the Capcom 'verse, Joystiq tells us that as of right now there are at least 30 fighters lined up for the roster. We know for sure that Ryu, Wolverine, Hulk, Iron Man, Morrigan, and Resident Evil's Chris Redfield will be playable because, well, they're in the trailer. But the keen eyes at Joystiq have further pegged some of the shadowy figures as Captain America, Chun-Li, Viewtiful Joe, Dante, Frank West (Dead Rising), Dr. Doom, Deadpool and Super-Skrull. That lineup alone has me jonesing for the game something fierce, I don't even want to speculate who will be revealed between now and Marvel vs. Capcom 3's 2011 release.
