Based loosely on Thierry Jonquet's 1995 novel Mygale, the film will focus on "a plastic surgeon who exacts terrible revenge on the man who raped his daughter." Yes folks, it will be a horror story, although Almodóvar notes that it will be "without screams or scares." He continues: "It's difficult to define and although it comes close to the terror genre -- something that appeals to me that I've never done -- I won't respect any of its rules. It's the harshest film I've ever written and Banderas' character is brutal."
The filmmaker has been working on this for a long time, hoping to bring together Banderas and Penelope Cruz for the project back in 2002. Post re-write, however, there's no "appropriate role" for Cruz. This is surprising, of course, since she has been in every one of his films over the last six years, though he does say there are other roles in the future. As Almodóvar notes, the film is "so different from anything I've done until now." Luckily, we shouldn't have to wait too long to see what it means on the big screen -- the film will be shot this summer.
What on earth will an Almodóvar horror look like? Thoughts?
