Charles Gant at the Cannes Film Festival 2010Back-to-back screenings this morning of two big hitters in the festival: Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's Biutiful, and Stephen Frears' Tamara Drewe. Biutiful returns the Mexican director to the Spanish language of his debut, Amores Perros, with a Barcelona-set tale about a father of two (Javier Bardem) struggling to make a living on life's margins.

Sean Penn (who was in Inarritu's 21 Grams) reportedly reckons it's a masterpiece, so expectations were high and not quite met, despite a towering performance from Bardem. The story is diffuse, the pacing overly deliberate (critic speak for "slow"), and the bleak outcome seems like a rigged game in which the writer-director is cruelly toying with his characters.
