Scene from Helen of Four GatesA long lost classic British film is to receive a UK screening... 80 years since it was last shown in this country. Helen of Four Gates wowed audiences way back in 1921 when it was first released with its depiction of grimness and poverty oop North, as the titular heroine endures hardship at the hands of menfolk.

Based on an acclaimed novel by Ethel Carnie Holdsworth, Helen of Four Gates stars Alma Taylor, a popular actress who was one of the first to be bestowed with the title 'star'. Taylor was voted Most Popular British Performer in 1915 and would go on to feature in over 150 films. Sadly, Helen of Four Gates and its director, the pioneering Cecil Hepworth, would suffer a different fate.
