James Cameron on the set of AvatarAvatar director James Cameron is the latest Hollywood director to join the attempt to stop the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Last week it emerged that Kevin Costner had become involved in the environmental disaster and had offered a device he had invented while working on his movie flop, Waterworld.

Now the acclaimed Canadian director of Titanic and The Abyss has joined the fight according to People. Cameron, who is an ocean technology expert, recently attended a meeting with underwater innovator Phil Nuytten in Washington. The pair first met when Nuytten's company, Nuytco Research, built the submersibles used in Mr. Cameron's 1989 underwater thriller, The Abyss.
