A mysterious Mortal Kombat minimovie hit the Internet today. At first glance, it seemed like an elaborate commercial for a new Mortal Kombat game, or some kind of expensive fan creation. (Whether a fan could ever actually afford to put this cast and set together is debatable!)
But according to CHUD, this is actually test footage shot by Warner Bros for a new Mortal Kombat movie. According to Latino Review, it was directed by Kevin Tancharoen, and the fight scenes were created by Larnell Stovall, the fight choreographer for Undisputed 3: Redemption. How it was leaked and why is unknown, unless Warner Bros, Tancharoen, and Stovall are merely hoping to gauge fan reaction. From the comments and Tweets I've seen, it's overwhelmingly positive. Kombat fans have longed for a film with all the gore of the game, and are hoping this means they could get the hard R version they want.
I've never played Mortal Kombat (only Street Fighter, and yes, I feel cheated somehow) and I've skipped seeing both big screen attempts. But if Warner Bros and Stovall could create 90 more minutes as good as this video, I'd watch it in a heartbeat. Especially if they give me more scenes with Matt Mullins.
Mortal Kombat: The Test Footage is embedded below. (The beheadings may make it a little NSFW.) According to Latino Review, the cast includes Michael Jai White as Jacks, Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade, Lateef Crowder as Baraka, Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion, and Mullins as Johnny Cage. Reptile and Sub Zero remain a mystery.
What do you think, gamers? Is this the Mortal Kombat movie we've all been waiting for?
