District 9Neill Blomkamp, who blew a hefty chunk of the critics away with District 9, his sci fi take on apartheid, is rumored to be one of the lead candidates for The Hobbit. He's taking over directorial duties from Benecio Del Toro, who had to step down after the cluster-screw that is the MGM sale was delaying production of the two-movie story to no end.

While this is an interesting choice, Blomkamp is best known for his documentary-style movies, and somehow the tale of Bilbo Baggins doesn't strike me as a documentary. On the other hand, it would certainly be a different take on the tale. Imagine a camera crew following a Hobbit and a band of dwarves searching for gold and fighting a dragon.

Blomkamp has the advantage of already having a relationship with Peter Jackson (who directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was one of the producers behind District 9). If Jackson supports him, that's good enough for me.

What do you think? Is Blomkamp too inexperienced as a director to take on such a major task?
