Before shoveling off for the long weekend (You do have Monday off, we hope), take a little time to check out 'Independent America: Thw Two Lane Search For Mom and Pop', currently streaming on

The film focuses on a simple, yet crucial, question: "Is there room for independent retailers in an American landscape littered with big-box corporate chain stores?" In an attempt to find an answer, alliteratively-pleasing husband-and-wife TV news team Hanson Hosein and Heather Hughes travel around the country, talking to independent business owners to get a sense of how they're holding up amid difficult economic conditions and stiff competition.

Taking in more than 30 states (all while avoiding interstate highways), the pair shows the ingenuity, determination and creativity that are the trademark of so many small business owners and their fight to stay alive against the Wal-Marts of the world. Getting screwed over and upended by a corporate giant? What's more American than that?
