Back in the day, if you wanted to keep up to date on Asian horror cinema, all you really had to do was pay attention to Japan and Hong Kong. That's changed over the course of the past few years -- with countries like Thailand, Singapore, and Korea getting into the fright film mix. Korea, in particular, has released some really great horror films -- a trend they look set to continue with this new trailer for Bedevilled.

Helmed by first time feature director Chang Jeol-soo, Bedevilled is one part twisted drama, one part slasher flick. According to the official synopsis, "Hae-won is a beautiful single woman in her thirties who works at a bank in the Seoul city. She leads a busy life until she becomes a witness to an attempted murder case, and at the same time, things get complicated at work. When things get out of hand she is forced to take a vacation so she heads for 'Moodo', a small undeveloped island, where she had once visited to see her grandparents. And where she had befriended a girl named Bok-nam who stills writes to Hae-won asking her to visit despite the fact that Hae-won never bothered to reply."

Once Hae-woo arrives, she learns of Bok-nam's terrible fate -- to serve as a slave for the island's residents. When she realizes her daughter's destiny is going to be the same as her own, Bok-nam tries to escape, but her daughter is killed in the process -- thanks to "Hae-won's negligence". The grieving mother snaps, grabs a sickle and sets out for revenge.

The trailer looks very intriguing. No word on when this might turn up in the US -- but I'd bet someone like IFC would be willing to pick it up. Hop past the break to see the new clip for yourself.
