M Night ShyamalanIt's officially open season on M. Night Shyamalan, director of upcoming fantasy film, The Last Airbender, and a man who's been on a critical and commercial slide since the glory days of his third film, the smash-hit, The Sixth Sense.

Even though The Last Airbender (based on a popular cartoon series) has recently passed the $100million mark at the US (making it his most successful outing for years) the reviews have certainly been horrific and, in some cases, designed to scathe Shyamalan as much as possible. One reviewer sums him up as 'once regarded as the most exciting talent in film, he now sits pretty as the laughing stock of Hollywood.' Ouch.

Anyway, this anti-M behaviour hasn't confined itself to print, as you can see from the video below. At a recent Mexican press conference for Airbender, a reporter tells Shyamalan to his face that he's lost it and is a sell-out.

His answer is particularly uncomfortable ("I think if I thought like you I'd kill myself. Everything you said is the opposite of my instinct as an artist. The way you just thought, I literally would kill myself,") but it is a bit weird that he can't see faults in his own work. Then again, is concrete belief in your art a bad thing? Perhaps casting yourself as a writer whose work has the ability to heal the world (as he did in Lady in the Water) is a step too far though.
