In a way, it almost breaks my heart whenever someone pulls the curtain back to reveal the chicanery behind a horror gimmick. It's like finding out how a spectacular magic trick works, only to learn that there's nothing cunning about it at all. On the other hand, it's hilarious. To see how filmmakers have ridden a particular trope into the ground makes you feel like you're in on the joke. Now that I've (finally) seen this video, I can't un-see it. Every time someone uses a mirror in a scene for a horror movie, I'm going to think of this clip and the dozens of movies within.

I understand that mirrors hold some sort of perceived magic. As a kid, I had recurring nightmares about them. There was always some masked maniac who lived in the mirror coming after me and my mom. Unfortunately, there really hasn't been a film that's tapped into that intrinsic spookiness. Aja's Mirrors made a decent effort, but turned into some bizarre action movie in the end. And this conversation would be better off if no one mentioned the 80's flick, the Boogeyman. Trust me. I watched it recently. It's bad.

If I searched long enough throughout the filthy pits of youtube, I'm sure I could find videos compiling and dissecting every possible horror movie cliche. Maybe I'll do that. Maybe. But not right now. I think one device destroyed forever for me is enough.
