Only in Japan could someone take a creature like H.P. Lovecraft's Nyarlathotep -- the shape-shifting Outer God lovingly referred to as "The Crawling Chaos" -- and turn him into a cute anime girl who helps a high school kid repel an alien attack. Talk about your Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot moments...

Website io9 brings news of the new animated project, entitled Haiyore! Nyaruko-San, which finds the ancient deity (who's usually not up to doing any favors for humanity's sake) appearing as Nyaruko -- a silver-haired girl cut straight from the Sailor Moon cloth. Haiyore! Nyaruko-San is based on a manga by Manta Aisora. No word yet if any of the other Elder and Outer Gods turn up at some point. I think this is a perfect opportunity for Cthulhu to appear as a bearded and dreadlocked Rastafarian or something.

When I first heard the news of Nyarlathotep appearing in an anime, I immediately assumed we were about to get another classic hentai tentacle porn flick. If you've seen Sota's cool Nyarlathotep statue, it's not really a stretch. Unfortunately, Haiyore! Nyaruko-San looks to be much more family-friendly. Despite this, I imagine H.P. Lovecraft is spinning in his grave at this news...
