Hoboken Waterfront

One of the most quoted movies of all time, 'On the Waterfront' was a smash hit when it was released in 1954, winning eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Elia Kazan). The film also won an Oscar for its leading man, Marlon Brando, cementing him as one of Hollywood's most iconic figures.

The pic centers on Terry Malloy (Brando), a man who must decide whether or not to expose the mob after he witnesses the murder of a local townie. Its subject matter was especially topical at the time, as two years prior to its release, Kazan outed members of the Communist party before the House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). In Hollywood, Kazan remained a controversial figure until his death in 2003.
