Gene ShalitIt's the end of an era: 'Today' show film critic Gene Shalit announced today that he will be retiring from the top-rated morning news program after an impressive 40-year run.

In a statement, Shalit said that he would "pursue other activities" -- among them publishing, radio and commercials.

"It's enough already," he said of his present gig.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, 'Today' will air a retrospective tribute to Shalit on his last day, which is scheduled for Nov. 11.

Shalit first joined 'Today' in 1970.

After the jump, check out a video Shalit from 'Today,' in which he gives Judd Apatow's 'Funny People' a scathing review.
