Hey end-of-the-world fans: Forget virus-infected zombies and the hordes of the walking dead that plague our movie theaters. We now have to contend with a lot of very angry primates in 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes,' a film that, based on this just-released trailer, looks like it's going to be very exciting and very scary, taking the Planet of the Apes saga to new heights. And any worries about using CGI effects for the apes instead of men-in-suits can forever be set aside. Based on this trailer, dang, those apes are real.
The film stars James Franco, Tom Felton, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto and John Lithgow, and takes place in modern-day San Francisco where experiments are being undertaken on chimps to develop a new drug called "The Cure" that allows the brain to cure itself. But the experiments get out of control when test chimp Caesar gets too smart (and too big for his britches) and releases the drug to his fellow apes, fomenting an ape uprising. The trailer's end tagline: "Evolution becomes revolution."
The official synopsis goes this way:
'Rise of the Apes' is an origin story in the truest sense of the term. Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man's own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' opens everywhere Aug. 5.
