Move over Scooby Doo, 'Hong Kong Phooey' is getting his own movie.

Don't remember him? Phooey was a '70s Hanna-Barbera creation, a dog named Penry who happened to be a "mild-mannered janitor" who would turn into a karate-chopping crime fighter by jumping in a file cabinet.

Eddie Murphy has just signed on to voice Penry, who will be animated in a live-action movie. In the original TV series, the character was raspily voiced by Scatman Crothers. (See the series intro after the jump.)

Alcon Entertainment's Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove raved about Murphy's involvement: "We could not be happier that Eddie Murphy will star as Phooey. There is no overstating his contributions to cinema, and to such enduring stars of family entertainments such as 'Shrek' and 'Dr. Doolittle.' We look forward to watching him re-imagine yet another classic character."
