Johnny Depp returns to Hunter S. Thompson territory in 'The Rum Diary,' but not as the drug-raddled mess he was in the hallucinogenic 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.' In a new still from 'The Rum Diary,' he looks calm, cool and collected as an American ex-pat living in 1950s Puerto Rico.
Depp is seen putting the moves on Amber Heard, whose character is dating one of his friends, played by Aaron Eckhart. (Honestly, we thought that was Scarlett Johansson rocking that retro 'do on first glimpse.)
Bruce Robinson, director of the '80s British cult hit 'Withnail & I,' directs from the Thompson novel, which was written in 1959 but not published until 1998.
Richard Jenkins, Michael Rispoli and Giovanni Ribisi co-star in the film, which opens October 28. Read the synopsis after the jump.
