As you may have noticed, 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked' arrived in theaters today with eyes toward grossing enough cash to fund a small island country. The third installment in the kiddie franchise will push the global earnings of Alvin, Simon and Theodore over $1 billion -- this despite near unanimous trashing from film critics over the last four years. Does 'Chipwrecked' do enough things right to make critics forgive the previous two films? Hardly! With just a 10 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 'Chipwrecked' isn't just one of the worst-reviewed films of 2011, it's the worst reviewed film in the franchise. (Which is saying something: 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' was at 26 percent, while 'Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel' was at 21 percent.) Who accounted for the positive notices this time around? Joe Neumaier, Lisa Giles-Keddle, David Ehrlich (despite his review being clearly negative; nice one, RT), Kerry Lengel and Graham Young.
