The working class have spoken: they chose to celebrate the Labor Day weekend by seeing "The Possession." The horror film about a mysterious box from Jewish folklore that contains a demonic spirit, scared up an estimated $17.7 million from Friday to Sunday. Although final earnings won't be determined until Tuesday, that puts well ahead of the number two movie at the box office: "Lawless." "Possession" earned the second highest Labor Day ticket sales ever, being beaten only by the 2007 remake of "Halloween."

Despite opening in an additional 659 theaters, the controversial documentary "2016: Obama's America" suffered 21.6 percent drop in attendance. The holiday's other new release "The Oogieloves and the Big Balloon Adventure" suffered the worst wide-release opening ever.
