With the release of "Argo, cineastes and critics have loudly proclaimed: Ben Affleck is no longer plagued by his past moviemaking mistakes; he is now a respectable filmmaker.

However, if you're still hung up on Affleck's dark years -- "Gigli," dating Jennifer Lopez -- he has some words for you.

In this month's DETAILS Magazine, the actor/director addressed the things that had blemished his career, and why everyone should get over it.

"In our culture, we get very much into shorthanding people. And I got shorthanded as That Guy: Jennifer Lopez, movies bombed, therefore he must be a sort of thoughtless dilettante, solipsistic consumer blahblahblah. It's hard to shake those sort of narratives," Affleck said. "If you were looking at that one-liner on me in 2003, which was definitely the annus horribilis... I was ending up in the tabloids. I don't know what the lesson is, except that you just have to find your compass."

However, nearly 10 years since the actor's self-proclaimed "annus horribilis," he isn't damning all of his panned movies, well except for that superhero flick.

"I liked 'Sum of All Fears.' 'Daredevil' I didn't at all. Some movies should have worked and didn't. At a certain point, it's just up to the movie gods. Anyway, this image becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. And I just said, 'I don't want to do it anymore. This is horrible. I don't want to be in this spotlight, this glare, in this way. It's tawdry, it's ugly, it's oppressive, and it's inane. So I'm going to try to get away...' People bring up 2003, and I get it. Jennifer Lopez, and 'Gigli,' and all this sh*t just kind of blew up. But, you know, in 2003, Barack Obama was a state senator in Illinois! Okay?"

For Affleck's sake, hopefully people will completely forget all about those things by the time "Argo" -- a film about six Americans who posed as a fake film crew to escape Iran -- hits theaters, on October 12. The film, which debuted at this week's Toronto Film Festival, had Affleck singing the praises of his Canadian hosts.
