What better time than Valentine's Day to watch a romance-filled movie based on a Nicholas Sparks novel?

"Safe Haven," a heartfelt drama about a woman (Julianne Hough) escaping an abusive relationship and finding love with a man (Josh Duhamel) where she least expects it, comes out in theaters on the most romantic day of the year. Not all smiles and sunshine, the movie also tackles tough issues like relationship abuse and coping with death.

Moviefone sat down with Duhamel and Hough, who talked about what it's like to take on romantic leads, how familiar they were with Nicholas Sparks' material, and how they made their love believable despite their very public relationships.

"Safe Haven" opens across North America on February 14.
