Captain America, meet the Sundance Kid.

Acting and directing legend Robert Redford is reportedly in talks to join the cast of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," a sequel to Marvel's superhero blockbuster.

According to Deadline, Redford would play a senior leader in S.H.I.E.L.D., the secretive super-spy organization. The sequel brings back Chris Evans as the titular Captain America and Sam Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. boss Nick Fury. "Winter Soldier" is set for an April 4, 2014 release date.

The casting comes as somewhat of a surprise, since Redford rarely appears in movies these days. This year, he directed and starred in "The Company You Keep" (in limited release this April) about a former activist on the run. He also appears in another project, "All Is Lost," about a man adrift at sea, in which he is the only cast member and has no dialogue. And Redford continues to remain busy with his work for the Sundance Institute and the Sundance Film Festival.

As Deadline speculates, this could open the door for Redford to make cameos in other Marvel movies, like 2015's "Avengers 2."
