With "Monsters University" opening this weekend, there is a whole flood of new trailers for children's movies rushing onto the Internet. The latest family-friendly teaser is for this summer's "The Smurfs 2," the sequel to the popular 2011 film "The Smurfs" (once again directed by Raja Gosnell), and it promises a whole bunch of unrelated silliness.

In the new film the villainous Gargamel (Hank Azaria) creates an evil version of the Smurfs called The Naughties. But apparently he needs some magical formula that only Smurfette (Katy Perry) knows, so they kidnap her and force her to do all sorts of awful stuff, like squeeze donut filling in someone's face and ride a bird through the streets of Paris. You know, awful stuff like that.

Much of the original cast is back, both in vocal performances and live-action roles, including Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Jonathan Winters, Fred Armisen, Alan Cumming, Anton Yelchin, George Lopez, and John Oliver. New cast members include Christina Ricci and J.B. Smoove as two of the evil Naughties, and Brendan Gleeson as a character who, in the trailer alone, gets turned into a duck.

While the trailer makes little attempt to explain the plot of the movie, or at the very least illuminate what exactly is going on in any of the scenes showcased, it promises to be candy-colored fun for a certain viewership. And even if you don't like this new cinematic "Smurfs" universe, you're going to have to get used to it: A third film is scheduled for release in 2015.

"The Smurfs 2" hits theaters nationwide on July 31.
