San Diego's massive Comic-Con is practically a second home for multihyphenates like Peter Jackson, but this year's comic-palooza will sadly be "Hobbit"-free.

Tolkien fans who were hoping to get a glimpse of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" will be disappointed to learn that Jackson has announced that he and his crew are foregoing the festival in favor of filming.

In a video posted on Facebook, Jackson says he can't afford to take a break from the final "Hobbit" movies, and that even making a sizzle reel to tantalize fans "would be hours spent away from the vital job of making the second and third 'Hobbit' films as cool as they can possibly be."

"This is the last-ditch shooting that we're doing," he continues, as people work behind him on a green-screen set.

Naturally, a ton of the stars are also down in New Zealand filming, which would make it even more difficult for them to put in an appearance during SDCC.

At the very least, there's still plenty of stuff to see on Jackson's official Facebook page, such as this production video diary (below), set photos, and other behind-the-set goodies. Recently, two major characters -- Ian McKellan's Gandalf and Orlando Bloom's Legolas -- got touching send-offs after wrapping their arcs for the entire trilogy.

We'll miss the "Hobbit" crew at SDCC, but at least we'll have Facebook.
