Jim Carrey may not like guns, but that doesn't mean he hates gun owners -- at least, that's the tune he was singing this weekend, when he posted a Twitter mea culpa for recent inflammatory statements admonishing assault weapon enthusiasts.

The Huffington Post reports that the comedian has taken to Twitter several times in the past to criticize gun rights advocates, calling them "heartless motherf*ckers" and "maniacs." Carrey's staunch support of tougher gun legislation is well-known, but he surprised many movie fans with his recent announcement that he would no longer help promote his role in "Kick-Ass 2" because, following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, he "cannot support that level of violence."

While many questioned why Carrey would rescind his association with the sure-to-be-lucrative film -- and Deadline noted that Carrey "completely [blew] an opportunity to use this movie as a platform to discuss" gun control -- the comedian assured his Twitter followers that he hadn't lost his mind.
