The director confirmed the news on his Twitter account Monday afternoon, tweeting this simple message:

Tom Cruise's team then confirmed the news: The "Jack Reacher" director had been loosely connected to the project for some time. This will be his second teaming with his "Reacher" star Tom Cruise, the "Mission" franchise's longtime leading man. McQuarrie was also a screenwriter on the Cruise films "Valkyrie" and "Edge of Tomorrow."

The movie is a big priority for Cruise, who left a starring role in the upcoming "Man From U.N.C.L.E." adaptation to focus on the venerable action franchise. Here's hoping he and McQuarrie can make movie magic again.
