Neill Blomkamp is having a good week. His latest movie, "Elysium," opened at the top of the box office, and now his next film, "Chappie," has gotten the green light from Sony and MRC.

"Chappie" centers on a robot with artificial intelligence that is stolen by gangsters who want to use him for their own evil plans. "District 9" star Sharlto Copley will voice the titular robot, and Dev Patel is also in talks to take a part in the film. Ninja and Yolandi Visser, members of rap group Die Antwoord and progenitors of the South African Zef counterculture movement, will play the two gangsters.

"We're huge fans of Neill Blomkamp -- it's a real thrill to be continuing our relationship with such a visionary and important filmmaker," said Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad. "Neill has proven that he is a true original voice, and we expect that 'Chappie' will strike a chord with worldwide audiences in the same way that 'District 9' and 'Elysium' have. We love the script he and [wife and screenwriting partner] Terri [Tatchell] have written."

Blomkamp previously said that "Chappie" will be a "touching" story, "but, you know, fraught with gunfire." Sounds like a winning combination. The movie is set to start shooting this fall.
