"What Maisie Knew"
What's It About? A modern update on Henry James's 1897 novel of the same name, this indie drama follows a six-year-old girl caught in the middle of her parents bitter custody battle. With her aging rock star mother (Julianne Moore), art dealer father (Steve Coogan), and mom's bartender boyfriend (Alexander Skarsgard), Maisie (newcomer Onata Aprile) learns to navigate through the adult's selfish behavior.
Why We're IN: While uncomfortable and sad, "What Maisie Knew" tells a deeply emotional story that will stay with you. The adult leads give memorable performances, but it is Aprile's rawness that makes the film so gripping.

"The Muppet Movie" The Nearly 35th Anniversary Edition
What's It About?
The classic 1979 (almost 35 years ago) movie was the first time we saw Kermit and friends on the big screen. In the movie musical Kermit takes off on a road trip to Hollywood to become a star, but is soon pursued by the evil Doc Hopper who wants to use Kermit for his fried frog legs fast-food chain.
Why We're In: This witty, fantasy adventure is one of the best in the Muppet movie franchise and a great family film always worth revisiting. Who could say no to Kermit?

"A Band Called Death"
What's It About? This rockumentary tells the story of Death, the first black punk band, or more accurately the first punk band ever, formed by the Hackney brothers in the 1970s. Before the Ramones or the Sex Pistols the brothers were playing music ahead of their time, but soon broke up after having little success. The film picks up later when their demo tape is discovered and their music finally finds an audience. "A Band Called Death" is an incredible story about the history of punk and a must-see for all fans of the movement.

"The Big Wedding"
What's It About? Another wedding comedy with a huge cast, except this one's not that good. Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton play the divorced parents of their adopted son (Topher Grace) whose biological mother (Susan Sarandon) shows up at his wedding, only to cause more chaos. Also starring Robin Williams, Katherine Heigl, and Amanda Seyfried, this would-be screwball comedy is nothing more than an embarrassment for a handful of talented (yet here talentless) actors.

"The Company You Keep"
What's It About?
When a young reporter (Shia LaBeouf) exposes Jim Grant's (Robert Reford) true identity as a fugitive and former antiwar radical, Grant must go on the run. The film also stars Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Julie Christie, Sam Elliot, Terrance Howard, and Brendan Gleeson. As director, Redford revels in slow pacing, making "The Company You Keep" more of a steady thriller than a suspenseful one.

What's It About? Peter Webber's war drama takes place at the end of WWII when American troops occupied Japan following the Emperor's surrender. Under Gen. MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones), Gen. Fellers (Matthew Fox, "World War Z") must investigate and decide whether Emperor Hirohito should be hanged as a criminal or saved. "Emperor" feels forcibly educational rather than climactic or entertaining and unfortunately wastes the talent of Jones.

"The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec"
What's It About? French action director Luc Besson ("The Fifth Element," "The Professional") adapts one of his homeland's most popular comic books: the adventures of a Parisian writer by day / heroine by night, who encounters mad scientists, arch-villains, dinosaurs, and mummies in the City of Light. If you don't mind a few subtitles, you're in for a rollicking fantasy film filled old-school thrills.

"Hatchet III"
What's It About? This final film concludes the "Hatchet" horror trilogy from Adam Green about Victor Crawley (Kane Hodder), the sociopathic killer who hunts the swamps of Louisiana. Marybeth (Danielle Harris) from the previous film returns to hunt down Victor along with the help of local townsfolk. "Hatchet III" has enough blood-spurting and grotesque mayhem to please any gore fan, but if that's not your thing give it a pass.

"The Hot Flashes"
What's It About?
Brooke Shields, Wanda Sykes, and Daryl Hannah, along with a few other women, are middle-aged Texas women who form a basketball team to challenge the current high school state champs. This silly story alone should be enough to turn you off of this predictable and meek comedy that feels like nothing more than a Lifetime movie.

"Olympus Has Fallen"
What's It About? The earlier version of "White House Down," this mindless action film follows the same story of a terrorist-seized White House, a kidnapped president (Aaron Eckhart), and a presidential guard (Gerard Butler) who has to save the day. A trite rip-off of "Die Hard" meets "Air Force One," the film's reputable cast -- including Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Melissa Leo, and Angela Bassett -- can't even save "Olympus" from falling.

"Body Double"
What's It About? An homage to Hitchcock, Brian De Palma's 1984 "Body Double" follows Jake (Craig Wasson), a man suffering from claustrophobia who witnesses a murder outside the window à la "Rear Window." But then Jake meets a porn star (Melanie Griffith) who impersonates the murdered woman (à la "Vertigo). While not his best, this sexed-up thriller is classic De Palma and far too underrated.

"Seconds" (Criterion Collection)
What's It About? This 1966 John Frankenheimer ("Ronin") sci-fi-thriller-horror stars John Randolph as Arthur Hamilton, an older businessman who discovers a company that changes identities with plastic surgery to give older men a second chance a youth. Once transformed Arthur is 20 years younger and renamed Tony Wilson, played by Rock Hudson. Although a flop at the time, "Seconds" was a daring work that is cherished today.

"Sexy Beast"
What's It About? This 2000 crime drama from Jonathan Glazer ("Birth") stars Ray Winstone ("The Departed) as a retired gangster who is recruited for one last heist by Don Logan (Ben Kingsley). While the story sounds a bit familiar "Sexy Beast" is a stylish and well-written crime film that is memorable for Kingsley's terrifying performance.

What's It About?
George Stevens' ("Giant") 1953 iconic western tells the story of Shane (Alan Ladd), a former gunfighter who settles down with a frontier family and must fight again when a gunman arrives. "Shane" is a classic, intelligent western that is a poetic and beautiful landmark that inspired the many that came after it.
