Amber Heard isn't interested in labels, something that applies to both her work and personal lives.
"I don't imagine myself, my work, or my life, fitting into any kind of standardized path," the 27-year-old actress reveals in the September 2013 issue of ELLE. "In fact, the idea of there even being a standard freaks me out a lot."
Right in line with that free-spirited philosophy, Heard has starred in everything from the 2008 comedy "Pineapple Express" to the just-released Liam Hemsworth thriller "Paranoia" to the upcoming grindhouse flick "Machete Kills" -- and she doesn't plan on ever specializing in one particular genre, let alone the genre she's expected to take on.
"I try to play characters who are somehow empowered or strong," Heard explains. "People want to put me in a wedding dress and make me the object of affection, but I'd much rather shoot the gun and save the world. I've always fought against what was expected of me as much as I could."
Before hooking up with her much-older "Rum Diary" co-star Johnny Depp, in the wake of his split from longtime love Vanessa Paradis, Heard romanced photographer Tasya van Ree for four years. She publicly came out as bisexual in 2010, and has no regrets about that decision.
"I didn't want to look like I was hiding anything," she says. "I'm not, and wasn't ever, ashamed."
