The latest and longest trailer for Ridley Scott's thriller "The Counselor" is here, and boy, things are looking tense.
In the Cormac McCarthy-scripted film, Michael Fassbender plays a greedy lawyer who gets involved with some sleazy drug-dealing dudes named Westray (Brad Pitt) and Reiner (Javier Bardem). Naturally, things go badly for Fassy's lawyer -- who seems to be known only as The Counselor -- and, we might suspect, for his babely fiancée played by Penélope Cruz.
Then there's Cameron Diaz in full vampy Ice Queen mode as Malkina, who is either another dangerous drug dealer or perhaps involved with Reiner on a less professional level. Or, you know, both. No matter how you slice it, Fassbender's lawyer is in trouble with a capital T, and chances are his fiancée is too.
"The Counselor" is the first original screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning author McCarthy. Plenty of McCarthy's books have been turned into movies, perhaps the most famous being "No Country for Old Men," which starred Bardem as the terrifying Anton Chigurh, a hitman with a terrible haircut and a cattle gun. It looks like Bardem got short shrift in the haircut department again in "The Counselor," with a horrendous wardrobe to boot.
Guns, explosions, big diamonds, and awesomely weird hair await us this October when "The Counselor" holds court in theaters.
