Fans of the BBC thriller "Luther" were murderously disappointed to find out that the show would be ending after three seasons, but perhaps this news will soothe them a bit: "Luther" creator and writer Neil Cross has announced he's working on a movie that will give us the dirt on the detective's life before the show begins.

"I've written the script and we hope to get the film made next year," Cross said while at the Edinburgh TV Festival. "Idris is a brilliant leading man and we've hoped to turn 'Luther' into a movie for a long time."

Idris Elba snagged a Golden Globe for his portrayal of John Luther, a detective whose obsessive dedication to his career, and the horrible crimes he investigates, has pretty much destroyed his chance at a normal life. What other detective has a sociopathic murderer for a BFF? (That would be Alice Morgan, played by the marvelous Ruth Wilson.)

As for the prequel film's plot, Cross explained, "It will follow [Luther's] career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe [Indira Varma], and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series."

It's thought that Warren Brown, Varma, and Steven Mackintosh will all appear in the film, although fan favorite Wilson probably won't, given the film's timeline.

Cross has also written a novel called "Luther: The Calling," which is about "the serial killer case that tore Luther's personal and professional relationships apart and propelled him over the precipice -- beyond fury, beyond vengeance, all the way to the other side of the law." (Fans might recognize this case as that of Henry Madsen, whom we meet at the beginning of the series.) There are also two more "Luther" novels in the works.

It will be interesting to see how the novel and movie work together, as it sounds like the movie will show perhaps a bit of a sunnier time in Luther's life, whereas in the novel, Luther encounters the case that could be the final straw for his personal and professional life.
