"Mad Men" star Christina Hendricks is taking on an intense new role in the adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel "Dark Places." Hendricks was previously slated to play a troubled stripper, but she's since been recast as the murdered mother of protagonist Libby Day -- a much meatier role, and one that has her far less titillatingly typecast.

"Dark Places" is the twisted tale of a gruesome multiple homicide and its one remaining witness, Libby Day. Libby, who will be played by Charlize Theron as an adult, testified as a child that her brother Ben murdered their mom and two sisters in what was thought to be a Satanic ritual. But when Libby is contacted by a group obsessed with serial killers, she begins to rethink her brother's guilt and what she really saw that night.

Libby's mother, Patty, will appear in flashbacks as Libby probes her memories. Corey Stoll co-stars as the adult Ben, while Chloe Moretz will play teenage Ben's girlfriend, Diondra, in flashbacks. Nicholas Hoult is Lyle, a member of the aforementioned Kill Club.

Hendricks was ignobly and immediately killed off in Nicolas Winding Refn's "Drive," and while she had a slightly bigger part in 2012's "Ginger & Rosa," it will be interesting to see her tackle a central role here. As Patty, a struggling single mom raising four kids, Hendricks will have a chance to show off a more dramatic, less glamorous side -- a welcome change for the actress who's primarily and unfairly been singled out for her curves rather than her chops.
