Turns out Josh Brolin's rumored attachment to the "Man of Steel" sequel wasn't just a rumor after all: The actor has confirmed that he was indeed in the running to play Batman in the rebooted Superman follow-up.

In an interview with the Huffington Post at the Toronto Film Festival, Brolin revealed that his representatives talked with director Zack Snyder about the role, but Brolin himself never spoke to Snyder and a deal never materialized. And as we all know, the role went to Ben Affleck instead.

"It just didn't turn out," Brolin said. "It's OK. It is OK. You know, another scenario might have worked better, but I'm happy for Ben."

Of course, the Internet is less than happy, with angry fanboys lashing out at Affleck's casting. Brolin said he was shocked to see "such a global reaction" to the news, and chastised those who took the casting so seriously.

"It's like, 'F*ck this guy, I wish he was dead.' And you're like, 'What? Dude, seriously? This guy is just working like you are. He's doing the same thing you are. He's trying to make the best choices he can,'" Brolin said. "... I just feel for anybody who gets lambasted at that level."

Brolin added that Affleck has a chance to prove everyone wrong.

"I want him to kick ass and I want everyone to love it and kind of eat their words," he said.

The hotly anticipated sequel is due out summer 2015.
