Christian Bale in 'American Psycho'Alamy

"American Psycho" is finally getting a sequel, in the form of a TV series.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the drama will be a follow-up to the 2000 film -- based on the 1991 Bret Easton Ellis novel -- and will revolve around serial killer Patrick Bateman, now in his mid-50s, grooming a young protege to carry the murderous torch. THR describes the relationship between Bateman and the young man as "a sadistic social experiment ... creating the next generation American Psycho."

With serial killers a hot commodity on TV right now, the show should fit in nicely among offerings like "Dexter" (which is airing its series finale in less than two weeks), "Hannibal," "The Following," and "Bates Motel." It's currently being shopped as a pilot to network FX.

The project marks Lionsgate's ("The Hunger Games") latest foray into TV production, on the heels of hit series including "Orange Is the New Black" (Netflix), "Mad Men" (AMC), and "Nashville" (ABC).
