Shooting action movies is harrowing work, according to Terry Crews, who recounted a near-death experience he and Jason Statham shared while filming "The Expendables 3" during an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno."
While discussing the sequel with Leno, Crews said he and Statham were performing a stunt near the Black Sea in Bulgaria that required Crews to sit in the back of a truck that Statham was driving.
"He literally is supposed to stop the truck, we get out, we shoot, the whole thing," Crews explained. "The truck doesn't stop. The truck goes over the dock, into the Black Sea with Jason Statham driving."
Crews said that many people think they might be calm or heroic in such a situation -- "In your mind, you have an action film where you're like, 'If that happens, I'm going to grab the truck,'" he said -- but when faced with the reality, all Crews and the rest of the filmmakers could do was look on in horror, "freaking out" and "screaming" as Statham and the vehicle disappeared under the water.
Luckily, Statham was able to swim out unscathed, leaving the truck at the bottom of the sea and gaining an admirer in Crews.
"Let me tell you something, Jason Statham is a true bad, bad dude," Crews told Leno.
Audiences will get to see that badassery for themselves when "The Expendables 3" hits theaters August 15, 2014.
