With the release of "The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector's Edition" Blu-ray box set comes a clip (below) of star Christian Bale's original audition for "Batman Begins," which nabbed him the lead and a place in one of the 20th century's most iconic superhero franchises.

The audition tape is part of an extended featurette exploring the ensemble of each of the trilogy's films, where director Christopher Nolan discusses the casting process for the titular hero.

Bale was the first actor -- among many -- that Nolan met with for the part, and the hopefuls all wore Val Kilmer's old Batman suit for their tryout. Nolan noted that filmmakers weren't looking for "acting ability or chemistry" but the ability "to project this extraordinary iconography from the inside, its visual iconography." Producers found that in Bale, Nolan said, who "had somehow figured this out before the screen test, that you could not give a normal performance, you could not give an ordinary performance. You had to project massive energy through this costume in order to not question this costume."

As you can see from the clip, Bale's infamous gravelly-voiced interpretation of the Caped Crusader is there from the beginning, which impressed Nolan and company and won him the part. That voice not only "supported the visual appearance of the character," Nolan explained, but it also conveniently disguised Bruce Wayne's speaking voice, protecting our hero's alter ego.

Check out the clip for more from Nolan, as well as Amy Adams standing in for eventual Rachel Dawes Katie Holmes. Adams will get her chance to act alongside Batman for real in the upcoming "Man of Steel" sequel.
